From the recent moves made during the January transfer window, it appears that John Bennett has been true to his word at Rangers.

This month, Mohamed Diomande and Fabio Silva are expected to join Philippe Clement’s team. Although the first transfer was a

cheap loan, the youthful Ivorian is expected to cost £4.5 million from FC Nordsjaelland.

Despite Michael Beale having spent a substantial amount of money on his unsuccessful summer rebuild, the Ibrox chairman had

indicated at last month’s AGM [Rangers Review, 5 December] that the new manager would be supported in the winter window.

“The manager has been very clear on the challenges of the January window,” Bennett had stated at the time. However, I wouldn’t be

concerned about our summertime experiences influencing Philippe’s goals in the slightest.

There wasn’t much behind Clement and Nils Koppen this month, with the general consensus being that Hearts would be given

millions if they were in the midseason budget for Lawrence Shankland.

Rangers, however, have made the decision to splash the cash on a 22-year-old midfield player, who will now need to accomplish what

far too many of the summer transfer haul couldn’t and get off to a quick start. The window opened more than three weeks ago.

Although the management still needs a striker and Abdallah Sima’s injury may make room for a winger, it’s uncertain how much more

money will become available before the deadline.

However, spending millions of pounds in January on a multimillion-pound deal—regardless of the player—is already a significant financial commitment for the Light Blues.

David Edgar of Heart & Hand responded to the news by labeling it a “huge outlay for January,” notwithstanding his initial skepticism

regarding the amount that BT in Denmark had revealed on January 23.

As Beale demonstrated, raising the necessary funds is one thing, but allocating them to the proper players is quite another. As such, a

lot will depend on Diomande’s performance at Rangers and the players Clement

can sign over the course of the next week.
