Philippe Clement handed transfer boost as key Rangers target turns down contract extension
A recent development at FC Twente seems to have increased Rangers’ prospects of securing a star on a cheap contract as they strive to
sign a left defender in the last days of the January transfer window.
For the Ibrox club, left back is presently a position of uncertainty. Borna Barisic has six months left on his deal, while champions
Galatasaray are supposedly leading the battle to acquire Ridvan Yilmaz. Meanwhile,
rumors about Yilmaz returning to Turkey has been swirling about.
According to TeamTalk, FC Twente star Gijs Smal is one player the Rangers recruitment staff is reportedly considering. Since joining
the Dutch team in 2020, the 26-year-old left back has made 87 league appearances in the top division while tallying four goals.
With his current contract about to expire in June, he may be spending his final season with the Eredivisie team. He is now in his fourth season there.
The defender is reportedly highly regarded by FC Twente, according to reports from Voetbal International, but his future is still up in
the air because he declined the opportunity to sign a new, long-term contract.
With back-to-back victories for Celtic, Smal has Europa League experience and may be a valuable addition to Philippe Clement’s team
as they look to win the Scottish Premiership again. Contrary reports from The National state that the Gers have other targets in mind
in addition to Smal, and others assert that Rangers are well-positioned to sign the player on a cheap contract before the window closes.
Rangers have already brought in Wolves sensation Fabio Silva on a season-long loan, and they are getting closer to finalizing the
acquisition of Mohamed Diomande, a midfielder.
