In an unexpected decision on Tuesday, the Bucks fired first-year coach Adrian Griffin. Doc Rivers, a former coach of

the Celtics, is one of the coaches Milwaukee is looking at replacing Griffin. The firing of Boston’s opponent, which

comes for a Bucks team that is tied for the second-best record in the NBA at 30-13, was first reported by Adrian

Wojnarowski of ESPN.com.

Griffin was released by the Bucks following a pair of close victories against the Pistons over the weekend. After

breaking ways with Mike Budenholtzer following a devastating first-round loss to the Heat in the Eastern Conference

quarterfinals back in 2023, Milwaukee hired Griffin during the summer.

Since being hired in the summer, Griffin’s tenure has been difficult, especially after Terry Stotts, his top assistant

coach, resigned prior to the start of the regular season. According to several accounts, Griffin also had apparent run-

ins with important veteran Bobby Portis and star Giannis Antetokounmpo following a defeat in the in-season

competition. Since David Platt’s departure as head coach of the Cavaliers in his first season in 2015–16, this will be

the first notable midseason coaching change on a top team. Cleveland went on to win that year’s NBA championship.

Wojnarowski reports that Joe Prunty will be designated the team’s temporary head coach while Rivers and other

possible candidates are taken into consideration. After spending three seasons in Philadelphia, the 62-year-old coach

was let go by the 76ers during the summer, making him the most experienced contender for a coaching position

currently open. During his nine seasons in Boston, Rivers won one NBA championship and made two visits to the

NBA Finals. But since the 2012 playoffs, he has not progressed past the Conference semifinals.

The Bucks will play the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night when they resume play under Prunty.
