Did the Bucks Doom Their Title Chances With Doc Rivers Hiring?

Doc Rivers, the 61-year-old coach, inked a multi-year contract with ESPN before the NBA season officially began.

After layoffs decimated the network’s NBA coverage, Rivers signed on to ESPN’s new lead commentator team

alongside Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame broadcasters Doris Burke and Mike Breen. However,

after being fired by the 76ers after Philadelphia’s playoff Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics the previous year,

Rivers was able to join The Worldwide Leader.

Rivers, who had coached the Magic, Clippers, and Celtics in the past and had won a championship with Boston,

was defeated 6-10 in Game 7s during his tenure. The Sixers’ loss was the eighth time a team led by

Coach Rivers lost a postseason series in which they had a 3-1 or 3-2 lead.

The Sixers had led the series 3-2 before dropping the final two games.

Rivers has lost two Game 7 appearances in three years with the Sixers and squandered two 3-1 series leads

with the Clippers. Since 2015, he is 0-9 in games that might win series in the second round.

According to ESPN, Rivers is also currently working as the coach of the Bucks after talks

brokered late on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday morning without a deal.

Even though the Milwaukee Bucks are now in second place in

the Eastern Conference at 30-13, they fired first-year coach Adrian Griffin yesterday,

just 43 games into his head coaching career.

The Bucks then hired Rivers. Joe Prunty, the assistant coach for the Bucks, was named interim head

coach; Rivers will take over in this role. During the season, this was a tough choice to make,

Bucks general manager Jon Horst said. “We are starting the process of selecting our next head coach right now.

We appreciate Coach Griffin’s dedication to the team and his hard work.

Rivers will now have to get two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, 2023 DPOY finalist Brook Lopez,

and superstar point guard Damian Lillard—who is in his first year with the Bucks—all the way to the

NBA Finals after failing to advance reigning league MVP Joel Embiid, former league MVP James Harden.
