Atletico Madrid reportedly made a bid for Matt O’Riley this week in an attempt to test Celtic’s commitment.

With the contract they made to acquire their star midfielder back in September, which is good for 2027, the Hoops are in a strong position.

Nevertheless, with the Danish international scoring 10 goals and dishing out 12 assists across all competitions thus far, they have been preparing for prospective bids.

Due to that performance, both Premier League and international teams have expressed serious interest in signing the playmaker. According to Sky Sports, Atleti has reportedly made an attempt to sign him as early as this January transfer window.

The report suggests the Spanish giants have offered a loan move for the player although within that would be an obligation to buy in the summer, thus effectively coming as a permanent transfer offer.

Celts don’t want to sell their star man and O’Riley is enjoying his time in the Premiership, but a hefty fee would force the club to consider the possible sale.

No figure has been listed in the report but Celts would likely be demanding top dollar for the 23-year-old.

That could even potentially be another record sale after the £25million earned on both Jota and Kieran Tierney.
