Josh Uche, a linebacker with the New England Patriots, is in a unique position to talk about Jerod Mayo’s coaching abilities.
Prior to being named head coach by the Patriots last week, Mayo was their linebackers coach. He has so collaborated with Uche a great deal since the Patriots selected the University of Michigan player in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

“I think Jerod Mayo was a great addition,” Uche said to Tom E. Curran during a recent Patriots Talk Podcast edition from NBC Sports Boston. Jerod was my position coach when I initially started working here. He was really patient with me, even though I still had a long way to go in terms of maturing. Just his really imaginative lens through which he views the game. It also allows the players a great deal of flexibility to utilize their skills to the fullest. Coach Mayo seems like a really wise hire.

Uche recently concluded his third Patriots season. Uche was not as effective this past season, with only eight single tackles and three sacks in 15 games, compared to a breakout 2022 campaign in which he made career highs with 23 solo tackles and 11.5 sacks in 15 games. Nevertheless, Uche is a tremendously gifted athlete, and in the modern NFL, pass rushers are crucial to success.
For Uche, this offseason is crucial since it will mark his first opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent. How does he feel as the offseason gets underway?

“My mindset is control the controllables, and that’s my training, that’s my diet, that’s my routine,” Uche said. “Just working outside the building as efficiently as possible. I let my agents take care of such things, kind of. There’s not much I can do about that, so I should simply focus on improving myself.”
