Clement could land Barisic’s next Kent in Rangers move for £3m wizard
The Light Blues are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the Eredivisie hotshot.
Glasgow Rangers still have some time to bolster their roster before the January transfer window closes in a little over a week.
In order to prepare the Light Blues for the fight for titles both domestically and in Europe during the second half of the season,
Philippe Clement is trying to bolster his playing roster.
One player who has been connected to a transfer to Ibrox is forward Million Manhoef of Vitesse.
The club is reportedly interested in signing the winger,
who may fetch up to £3 million,
according to a TEAMtalk story from earlier this month.
Given that Abdallah Sima lacks the creative attributes that made the aforementioned combo so terrifying for opposing defenses,
Clement may now pursue Ryan Kent, Borna Barisic’s replacement, on the left side.
Barisic and Kent’s chemistry
With their explosive link-up down the left side,
the two regularly created excellent opportunities for their teammates,
frightening full-backs.
The table below shows how effective they were as creators during the club’s final Scottish Premiership campaign,
which took place in 2020–21 under Steven Gerrard.
Under Gio van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale,
they also attracted attention the previous season when Kent recorded eight assists,
nine “big chances” created, and 2.2 key passes per game in 29 league games,
in addition to Barisic’s nine assists, twelve “big chances” created,
and 2.3 key passes per match in 30 games.
However, in 11 league games this season,
the Croatian international has only produced one “big chance.
” Sima’s lack of inventiveness on the wing may be the cause of this,
as the forward has only produced two “big chances” and 1.0 crucial passes per game in 20 Premiership games.
The statistics that show why Manhoef could be Barisic’s next Kent
By adding Manhoef as his next Kent on the flank,
Rangers may be able to get Barisic back to his best while giving Sima more flexibility to play in the middle or on the right wing.
The 22-year-old attacker’s play for Vitesse during the 2022–2023 season indicates that he possesses the inventiveness to be the Gers left-back’s ideal partner.
In terms of shot-creating actions (3.76) per 90 and expected assisted goals (0.20 per 90),
he was among the top 11% of Eredivisie midfielders, ranking in the top 13%.
With 27 starts in the Dutch top division,
Manhoef—who Dutch football writer Michael Bell said had “pace to burn”—contributed with five assists and ten “big chances” generated.
These numbers demonstrate his ability to be a potent creative threat on the left flank.
The Dutch wizard, who has scored 13 Eredivisie goals since the start of last season,
has the creativity to form an exciting partnership with Barisic at Ibrox, just as Kent did.
Together, they might provide excellent opportunities for players like Todd Cantwell,
Cyriel Dessers, and Sima to find the back of the net,
giving them both a reliable threat in the last third.
However,
having Sima in front of him has limited Barisic’s production this season as the forward is more concerned with scoring goals—10 league strikes—than with setting up opportunities for others.
