Last Monday, the Las Vegas Raiders made it official,

removing the interim tag off Antonio Pierce’s job title and naming him the storied franchise’s new head coach.

Pierce’s primary priority remains to fill up the rest of his coaching staff,

including the empty offensive coordinator post.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Raiders will interview former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi called the Raiders’ offensive plays to start the season. However, the Raiders fired the two, along with general manager Dave Ziegler, in late October. Bo Hardegree, the quarterbacks coach, took over.

Luke Getsy: Long-time NFL Coach

Getsy, a former Pitt Panthers and Akron Zips quarterback, began his coaching career in 2007 at his alma school. The Pennsylvania native joined the NFL in 2014, serving as an offensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers under Mike McCarthy.

He became a wide receivers coach in 2016 and returned to college as an offensive coordinator in 2018. After a brief one-year tenure with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, he returned to Green Bay as quarterback coach alongside future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers and current starter Jordan Love.

The Chicago Bears stole Getsy from the Packers in 2022, designating him the team’s offensive coordinator under head coach Matt Eberflus. During his debut season, the Bears averaged 19.2 points per game, up one point from the previous year.

Quarterback Justin Fields rushed for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns. However, he struggled as a passer, tossing only 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 games. In 2023, the Bears’ offensive productivity remained relatively flat, scoring 21.2 points per game.

Fields once again failed to reach 20 passing touchdowns. Despite Chicago’s failure to produce offense through throwing, the Bears finished in the top two in rushing yards both seasons with Getsy.

Las Vegas Raiders: Turning the Page to 2024

The Raiders will begin a new era next year, the first with Antonio Pierce as their official head coach. Las Vegas was 5-4 this season with Pierce as interim head coach, including a 63-21 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in mid-December.

The AFC West club has the thirteenth overall pick in the forthcoming draft. In his inaugural mock draft, NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah predicts that Las Vegas will select Penn State offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu.
