3 strikers Rangers could sign to upgrade on Dessers before the deadline

It is imperative that Rangers expand their offensive alternatives prior to the transfer window closing.
In their Scottish Cup fourth-round match on the weekend, Glasgow Rangers defeated Dumbarton with four goals, but Philippe Clement’s team could have scored more.

The Ibrox boss was happy with his team’s professionalism, and two players—Ryan Jack and Borna Barisic—were able to log some much-needed minutes in spite of recent injury setbacks.

Cyriel Dessers, who scored his tenth goal of the season in the 4-1 triumph over the Sons, was one of those who found the scoresheet.

Since joining the Ibrox team last summer, he has scored about once every three games. On the surface, that seems like a respectable record, but he has struggled this season, missing 11 significant opportunities to score and playing poorly.

Clement does not have long to find another striker who could be an improvement over the Nigerian, as the transfer market closes next week. These three forwards have the potential to join the Light Blues this month and take Dessers’ spot in the starting lineup.

Tommy Conway

First up is the most recent name connected to a potential transfer to the Gers. Football Insider claims that Clement is keeping an eye on the Bristol City forward in preparation for a possible winter transfer window move.

The Old Firm rivals Celtic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford are among the teams vying for the City striker, who has evidently drawn a lot of interest from his exploits.

Conway recently proved he could perform well against the best when he scored the game-winning goal against West Ham United in their FA Cup replay, earning the nickname “clinical” from Statman Dave in the process. This could entice Clement to consider a move.

Despite having two less goals than Dessers this season, he has only missed five clear-cut opportunities in the Championship, which is six fewer than the Gers striker and indicates that he is a more accurate shooter. The six-foot-one powerhouse is only twenty-one years old, making him eight years younger than the former Feyenoord frontman.

This suggests that he is still in his prime, and the Belgian may be persuaded to lure him to Scotland sooner rather than later. Though the next player on the list comes from nearby, he is not the only striker who has been linked to a move to Rangers as a potential Dessers replacement.

Lawrence Shankland

Lawrence Shankland, who is a hot commodity right now, is arguably the player that has been cited the most when it comes to leaving their present club to join the Light Blues.

Football Insider reports that the Gers may try to lure the Scottish striker to Glasgow this month in the hopes that he can maintain the incredible goal-scoring form that has made him stand out at Hearts since the beginning of the previous campaign.

Although it may not seem like much, Shankland will be 29 this year, and spending that much money for a player who has little to no resale value could be a mistake. He could end up costing roughly £3 million.

But for the time being, he would be preferable to Dessers. Moreover, Shankland has scored more goals this season (18 versus ten), recorded more shots (3.6 versus 2.9), made more successful dribbles (0.9 versus 0.4), and scored more frequently (a goal every 145 minutes versus a goal every 187 minutes). These numbers suggest that the 28-year-old could score more frequently in Scotland than Dessers.

The Hearts striker would be a wonderful fit for the team, according to former Rangers great Barry Ferguson, who stated: “Let’s start with Lawrence Shankland who catches my eye every time I see him play for Hearts.”

“Watching him on Wednesday, I saw a ready-made Rangers center forward, but I’m surprised he hasn’t been picked up already because he has improved his game so much over the last couple of years.”
The former Dundee United star may play in Europe and contend for prizes if he joins Rangers. He might find it extremely difficult to refuse if a move were made, that much is certain.

Emmanuel Dennis

Emmanuel Dennis is the last name on the list, and Clement is well familiar with him from his time at Club Brugge. Dennis has been linked to a move during the current transfer window.

The player’s offer to the Gers was reported earlier this month by Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who stated: “Emmanuel Dennis has been proposed to the club but there hasn’t been an official approach as of yet.” However, I can attest to the player’s interest in the Rangers.

During his time in Belgium, the Nigerian striker netted goals against teams like Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Europa League, totaling ten goals in 46 appearances under Clement at Club Brugge.

This demonstrates unequivocally that he has what it takes to score against the best, and even though he hasn’t had much success this season, Clement might find his versatility appealing.

The 26-year-old can, in fact, play through the middle, on the left or right side, and even off the main striker at times in his professional career.

Dennis could be able to reconnect with the 49-year-old by joining the Light Blues, and that could be just what he needs to get back to his peak performance.

It is unclear if the team will be able to get any of these three players to Scotland in the near future, but they would all provide something unique to Clement as he looks to bolster his roster.

The former AS Monaco coach may prioritize signing at least one more center-forward before the transfer window closes next week if he wants to add further titles to the League Cup that was won last month.
