Michael Stewart blasts Cyriel Dessers, backs Rangers to sign Lawrence Shankland
Hearts striker Kyle Hearts has been strongly linked to the Ibrox club,
but talks about a new contract with his current club have prevented a transfer from happening.
However, Stewart asserted in a live interview on Viaplay Sports (20 January) that he would be shocked if the Ibrox team weren’t trying to sign Shankland this month,
before to Rangers’ cup victory against Dumbarton.
He stated, “I think the evidence we have so far points to the need for reinforcements there,
and there’s obviously a lot of speculation about a certain number nine (Shankland) along the M8 at Hearts.”
“In my opinion, Lawrence Shankland is a superior striker compared to Cyriel Dessers.”
“He could [make the step up], in my opinion,
but Hearts won’t want to lose him.”
The Rangers should seriously consider Lawrence Shankland, even if he will come at a significant financial cost.
Brutal
Although Shankland is currently the talk of the town in Scotland and even in Glasgow among supporters and the media,
there is no assurance that he will solve the goal problems.
Despite his struggles this season, Dessers is unquestionably dedicated to the cause and constantly puts in his best effort,
even when his finishing isn’t up to par.
But, the club is not in a position to throw money about carelessly,
and it will not be simple to return after spending about £15 million in the summer on Dessers, Sam Lammers, and Danilo.
Shankland, 28, has never really been very productive,
and the majority of his goals have come from penalties,
something he won’t be able to take advantage of while James Tavernier is still in the team.
Is Shankland a better option than Dessers? Indeed.
Does that imply that he is the solution and that we ought to invest heavily in him? Without a doubt not.
Tam McManus supports the Ibrox club’s decision to “test the water” for a new striker this month, in other Rangers news.
