According to a Patriots free agency rumor, Michael Onwenu is allegedly leaving New England.
Now that longtime head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick has left the
New England Patriots, the team is going through a significant period of change.
On the 24-player deep list, offensive lineman Michael Onwenu is among the most well-known players. Onwenu, a 2020 sixth-round draft choice,
has been among the Patriots’ most reliable players over the past four seasons,
contributing strong play at multiple offensive line spots.
It wouldn’t be shocking if other teams in the league expressed interest in Onwenu.
Since moving to New England, he has emerged as one of the league’s top lineman,
providing both starting experience and a solid resume at guard and tackle.
He saw first-team reps at both spots in 2023.
Although he started the season as the Patriots‘ right guard, he was switched to
right tackle in Week 7 to help stabilize a position that had previously seen
inconsistent play and personnel changes; once Onwenu took over,
the right side of the line appeared to be improving as a whole.
Even with new leadership, the Patriots should prioritize keeping one of its best players, given his success and the general uncertainty surrounding the team’s offensive line in particular. This is particularly true since, according to Miguel Benzan, the team is expected to be about $70 million under a $242.5 million ceiling in 2024, placing them among the league leaders in terms of available salary cap space.
