Top-3 Free Agents I Want the Dallas Cowboys to Retain

Dallas Cowboys supporters were sure that this season was their greatest chance at a Super Bowl,

and with good cause.

Dak Prescott was easily the greatest passing quarterback in the NFC,

and clubs with the top quarterbacks must capitalize on the talent disparity.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys were unable to capitalize,

losing at home to the seventh-seeded Packers like Bluebonnets after a Texas frost.

One of the primary reasons this was the year to strike was the large number of players that entered free agency.

The Cowboys have 16 players with expiring contracts,

and many of them are key players for depth and rotation.

Today I’d like to play a little game.

Out of the 16 looming free agents, if we could only pick the top three we’d want to return,

which three would they be? Here are my top three.

LT Tyron Smith

Some of you may be rolling your eyes while reading this, but hear me out.

Would it surprise you to learn that Tyron Smith was named second-team All-Pro in 2023,

the fifth time he has received that honor?

This is also the first time he has received the accolade since 2016.

So, what changed?

The main reason has been Dallas’ decision to give Tyron a veteran rest day from practice for the entire season.

This adjustment in routine reduced wear and strain on Tyron’s body,

allowing him to play to his full potential during games.

Tyron is getting old, but he proved this season that he can still be an exceptional left tackle.

Tyler Smith earned All-Pro accolades this season at left guard,

and I’d rather keep him there than move him to left tackle.

Bring Tyron back on a one-year contract and draft a future left tackle to groom.

CB: Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore, a seasoned cornerback, is another player I’d want to see return to Dallas.

Gilmore played strong football in 2023 and provided much-needed senior leadership in a youthful secondary room.

The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year did not receive the same recognition this season, but he was a valuable addition to the defense.

This was especially noticeable when Dallas’ All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs suffered a ruptured ACL early in the season.

The Cowboys were unable to withstand injuries in their cornerback room in 2022, which contributed significantly to their playoff exit.

Gilmore adds security to one of the borders and will give Diggs enough time to fully heal from his torn ACL without causing a significant talent dip.

Perhaps Gilmore will be willing to take a team-friendly deal rather than move to his fifth team in the last five years.

First team All-Pro DaRon Bland might also benefit from another year of instruction from one of the greatest players of all time.

Stephon Gilmore: Can he rise to the occasion as Dallas enters tougher schedule?

C. Tyler Biadasz

This is likely the most contentious of my options, but despite Tyler Biadasz’s shortcomings as a run blocker, I believe it is critical to retain continuity for Prescott.

It’s easy to overlook the relationship between the center and the quarterback, but just consider the history.

Troy Aikman played his finest football when receiving snaps from Mark Stepnoski.

Tony Romo’s best successful years were spent with Travis Frederick in the middle of the line making calls.

Say what you want about Biadasz, but he has been a constant for Prescott since he was chosen in 2020.

Biadasz was not selected for the 2023 Pro Bowl, but he is only one season removed from his first and only appearance.

That one award may push him price up a bit, but Dallas should be able to swing a three-year deal to keep Dak comfortable under center
