The Dallas Cowboys Are In a State of Uncertainty

The NFL Divisional round playoffs begin this weekend,

but the Dallas Cowboys are already working on team development until 2024.

Losing in the Wildcard round as the second seed in the conference is one of the worst ways to exit,

leaving the team with a lot of concerns.

For the time being, we already have answers to a few of those questions.

We know Mike McCarthy will return for his fifth season as head coach,

and I believe it’s safe to assume Dak Prescott will stay.

Aside from that, the Dallas Cowboys’ future is uncertain on two fronts.

Is Dan Quinn staying or leaving?

Following the announcement that Mike McCarthy would officially return for his fifth season,

the next greatest issue on the coaching staff is the status of DC Dan Quinn.

Quinn has been the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator since 2021,

when McCarthy replaced Mike Nolan following a very bad season for the Cowboys defense.

He’s brought steadiness, explosiveness, and a knack for getting the ball away.

The Cowboys have set a team record by leading the league in turnover differential for the third consecutive season.

Quinn’s defense has also produced two standout cornerbacks in recent seasons.

Trevon Diggs led the league in interceptions in 2022, earning first-team All-Pro honors.

DaRon Bland’s breakout season came in 2023.

Bland was near the league lead in interceptions, and he set an NFL record by returning five of them for touchdowns.

We also have to acknowledge Micah Parsons’ progress into one of, if not the finest, defensive players in the league.

If Quinn is offered a head coaching position somewhere, Joe Whitt Jr. is a likely candidate to take his place.

Which Free Agents Should be Retained?

Dallas will face some difficult decisions this offseason as 16 players hit unrestricted free agency.

Here’s the complete list:

Okay, some of these decisions aren’t that difficult, but for big-name players, the Cowboys must determine whether to offer a new contract or not.

Tyron Smith, Stephon Gilmore, and Tyler Biadasz are the top three players I would like to see return to the squad.

I would not be surprised if the remaining 13 players on the list do not wear Cowboys uniforms next season.

Tyron demonstrated that if the Cowboys limit his practice time, he can still play at an All-Pro level at left tackle.

I’d like to go another year on that body maintenance plan.

I’d also like to see Stephon Gilmore back so we can see what a complete season with Gilmore and Diggs on the boundary and Bland in the slot looks like.

Tyler Biadasz has shown significant growth in previous seasons, and keeping that familiarity for Dak Prescott bodes well.
