Potential Raiders NFL Draft pick: S Oregon’s Evan Williams
Potential Raiders NFL Draft pick: S Oregon’s Evan Williams
In an effort to strengthen the squad, the Las Vegas Raiders have shifted their focus to the 2024
NFL Draft and are searching for talent at all positions.
Under new permanent head coach Antonio Pierce, the Raiders defense improved in the second
half of the season and appeared to be among the best in the NFL.
With Pierce now in charge full-time, the Raiders will search for players who mesh well with the
culture and system he is creating in Las Vegas.
Evan Williams, a safety for Oregon, might be among those players. Williams, a transfer from Fresno State,
played his final season as a student-athlete for the Ducks.
With 308 total stops, 16 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, five and a half sacks, 14 passes defended,
and four interceptions by the end of his career, Williams had an impressive career.
In 2023, he was recognized as Second-Team All-Pac 12. In his lone season with the Ducks,
Williams recorded 82 total tackles and 4.5 sacks, which was excellent.
He did not, however, receive an invitation to the Senior Bowl or the Shrine Bowl.
If he hopes to raise his draft stock, he must perform well on his athletic pro day.
Pro Football Focus claims that he is an excellent coverage safety as well, giving up just
one score in 464 coverage snaps. Williams can tackle well, but he often takes bad angles
when going after the ball carrier.
Teams may be hesitant to select and use him heavily because he performs better as a zone
defender than a man coverage defender.
Williams, who has the ability to surpass his anticipated draft positioning, is presently
projected to be a fifth or sixth-round selection, so if the Raiders are wanting to add
depth to their secondary, they may get Williams.
