Gary Keown tears Rangers chief John Bennett to shreds after ‘jaw-dropping’ Ibrox turn of events
The journalist with Scottish Mail on Sunday began by highlighting the public altercation with referee Willie Collum.
She then discussed the team’s inability to reach a consensus with Celtic on away allocations,
and finally the finances at Ibrox.
This tirade, aimed at Bennett, questioned Clement’s motivation for joining the Rangers and implied that,
with too much going on behind the scenes,
he might already be regretting that choice.
“Lord knows how Rangers sold themselves to the former Club Brugge boss,”
said Keown in his diatribe for the Scottish Mail on Sunday [January 21, pages 94/95].
John Bennett, the chairman,
most likely gave him a dose of his tried-and-true “best-in-class” speech.
“Clement has been swiftly disabused of the idea that he is at the center of a well-oiled,
perfectly operating machine by a cursory glance under the hood.
“They went from having the moral upper hand in the dispute over some horrible officiating at the last Old Firm game to being the bampots
yelling at passing traffic again after making the politically foolish demand that Willie Collum never officiate their games again.
The inability to resolve the standoff that so severely degrades the spectacle and prohibits away fans from attending the nation’s biggest derby by sitting down with Celtic is a reflection on all parties concerned.
“It was astounding to see the annual accounts released,
which included a £64 million wage bill and a net loss of more than £4 million at the conclusion of a season that included Champions League play and Calvin Bassey’s £20 million sale to Ajax.”
Keown is correct when he draws attention to the Rangers’ chaotic origins.
Although the club has always been heavily interested in off-field matters,
their level of involvement seems to have increased recently.
It’s not a good image to get into such public arguments with referees that the club insists they not officiate any of its games.
While there are problems with the Celtic discussion that need to be resolved on both sides, the club’s financial management has been dubious.
Clement should just concentrate on the football and leave people in the background to their own devices;
it is not his responsibility to worry about what the club and the chairman are up to behind closed doors at Ibrox.
Despite his brief tenure as Rangers manager,
Clement can still be happy with some aspects of the team, and it’s not all bad news at Ibrox.
After all, he has only suffered one competitive loss—the one they didn’t want to lose against Celtic.
