Ex-Rangers midfielder talks about the financial benefits of potential Ibrox return
Ex-Rangers midfielder Rhys McCabe admits Airdrie are eyeing a Scottish Cup payday against either side of the Old Firm after his team stunned St Johnstone.
Since taking over the Diamonds in May 2022,
the 31-year-old Ibrox Academy alumnus has taken his biggest scalp to date,
defeating Craig Levein in the cup.
Nikolay Todorov scored the only goal of the game as Championship Airdrie defeated their Scottish Premiership counterparts in a well-earned victory.
And now insists Rangers or Celtic are in the club’s scotish sights with the powers that be at the Excelsior Stadium praying for an Old Firm payday.
Rhys McCabe talks potential Rangers return Speaking after the victory,
the talented young manager was asked if he fancied a return to Ibrox and it was a very clear personal yes.
But the allure of a payday similar to that of Celtic’s fourth round opponents Buckie Thistle is also not lost on the ex-Sheffield Wednesday star.
“Of course (I’d love a return to Rangers), and there’s a part of me,
being a Rangers supporter, that I’d love Celtic as well,” said McCabe.
“We could get Bonnyrigg away and it is one of those kinds of draws,
so I’m not too fussed.
This is one of those occasions when we will be happy with the person we receive.
“I understand that the club’s owner is hoping for a successful away game,
both financially and in terms of a fun day for the fans.
“Eyeing a Scottish Cup run, Airdrie
Additionally, Rhys McCabe has been discussing the strategy of his Airdrie team,
who finished last season in the Premiership playoffs despite presently holding the fourth-place position in the Scottish Championship.
The aggressive style of the second division team has already triumphed over Premiership opposition,
and McCabe says he won’t alter it regardless of Airdrie’s opponent.
“We will approach the game with the same mentality regardless of who we play,
” McCabe declared. “We’re going to play the same strategy and strive to win.
“It doesn’t matter if it was Real Madrid, Rangers,
or Celtic—I play to win, and the boys will feel more confident after today’s performance.”
“We might get a little cup run if we can get someone [winnable].”
Rhys McCabe joined Rangers from the Academy and appeared in nine games for the team until the midfielder was sent to Sheffield Wednesday due to financial difficulties at the Gers.
Following stints in Irish football and the Scottish lower leagues,
Rhys McCabe joined Airdrie in 2021 as a player and was named player/manager a year later.
