5 things to know about Mohamed Diomande as Rangers next transfer decks Ibrox hero on road to stardom

Mohamed Diomande is expected to be Philippe Clement’s second January acquisition.

The Belgian manager acted quickly to arrange a loan agreement for Wolves’ Fabio Silva,

who spent the winter in La Manga and is now playing match minutes at Ibrox as he adjusts to life in Glasgow.

Nordsjaelland midfielder Diomande appears to be the next in line,

with various sources in Denmark indicating that he has left the Danish side’s training camp in

the United States and will have a physical with the Light Blues.

He had previously been linked with Bundesliga clubs Union Berlin and RB Leipzig,

but it looks that all roads lead to Glasgow for the talented midfielder.

So, what do we know about the 22-year-old? Record Sport digs further as

Rangers fans get to know the Ivory Coast Under-23 international even more.

Path to stardom

Diomande has taken the same road as Mohammed Kudus to professional football.

Rangers fans will be all too familiar with the former Ajax star,

who has scored against them both at home and away in the Champions League.

Both players began their professional careers in Denmark with Nordsjaelland before moving to Amsterdam.

He has subsequently gone to West Ham in the English Premier League for another big money switch,

and is arguably the biggest star from the ‘Right To Dream’ route, with Mikkel Damsgaard,

who is now at Brentford.

Right to Dream

As previously stated, Diomande is a graduate of the ‘Right To Dream’ academy.

FC Nordsjaelland was the community’s first professional club,

and it has served as a perfect platform for numerous young stars to make their professional football debuts.

According to the club’s official website, “Between April 2018 and March 2023,

FC Nordsjaelland offered a fantastic platform for 41 players under the age of 20 to make their debut,

setting a new standard for youth development in football.” FC TUT,

an Egyptian football team, will join in 2021 and has ties to San Diego in the Major League Soccer.

Taught Kent and Co a lesson.

Diomande was a member of the Nordsjaelland team that defeated Fenerbahce on the European stage.

In the Europa Conference League, the Danish team scored SIX goals against the Turkish heavyweights.

It was a famous night at the huge stadium, with former Rangers star Ryan Kent on the opposing team.

It was payback for a 3-1 loss in Turkey, but despite collecting TEN points,

they were unable to advance to the next level. Michy Batshuayi,

a name making headlines in Scotland recently, scored in both games for Fenerbahce.

Free to play in Europe

This will be the one that Rangers fans will be desperate to know.

And the answer is – YES.

The midfielder has already participated in the Europa Conference League this season,

but rules put in place a few years ago mean he will be entitled to play in

the Europa League last 16 round and beyond if the Ibrox side continue to advance.

According to an article released by UEFA on January 1 of this year,

“The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League,

and UEFA Europa Conference League knockout hopefuls are allowed to register a

maximum of three new eligible players during the winter.”

Since 2018/19, it makes no difference whether those players

had previously participated in the tournament for another club, even if that team is still in the competition.

Bags of Experience

At just 22 years old, the midfielder has already made over 100 appearances for his current team.

As previously said, he has also performed in Europe.

His numbers aren’t too shabby either, with 13 goals and 14 assists in 111 games across all competitions.

Philippe Clement will rely heavily on versatility, something the teenager will bring to the table.

His arrival would also fit into the paradigm of developing players and

then charging considerably higher fees in the future,

as seen with Calvin Bassey and academy graduate Nathan Patterson.
