Rangers’ ‘glaring requirement’ highlighted in January transfer window to push Celtic in title race

Rangers boss Philippe Clement has a “glaring requirement” to sign a centre forward in the remainder of the January transfer window, according to Daily Record journalist Andy Newport.

The Light Blues have brought in Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves to improve their offensive options but are allegedly still in the hunt for a more out-and-out striker.

dailysport, writing in the Record’s print edition on Saturday (20 January, page 49),

says doing so is essential if Rangers are to continue fighting with Celtic in the second half of the season.

“A proper centre-forward is the glaring requirement,” he wrote.

Cyriel Dessers isn’t the answer and Fabio Silva looks like he’s better suited to coming in off the left wing.

“Gers need an out and out No.9 if they are to properly push Celtic.

”There is absolutely no doubt about it,

Rangers need more firepower before the window slams shut.

With Danilo out for the long term and Kemar Roofe unable to stay fit, much of the onus has been on Cyriel Dessers,

who frankly is just not going to be a consistent enough source of goals to bring the title to Ibrox.

Lawrence Shankland of Hearts has obviously been heavily tipped with a move to the club and that would be an excellent signing,

though the longer it goes on the more difficult you expect that deal will be to complete.

But whether it’s Shankland for someone else, Clement could really do with another forward option,

one who is a more traditional fox-in-the-box type striker.

Clement has worked wonders to get Rangers’ season back on track after the disaster under Michael Beale and the board really has to back him this month to give him the tools he needs to challenge Celtic.

In other Rangers news, an update has been provided on the future of Alex Lowry with a “quickfire” decision expected.
