Even though it hasn’t even been a full week since the Green Bay Packers humiliated the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs,

it already seems like a lot has changed. It goes without saying that this is not the case at all because there has been no actual change.

The Cowboys, led by team owner, president,

and general manager Jerry Jones, declared this week that Mike McCarthy will return in 2024,

despite the franchise’s repeated humiliation in the postseason.

Interestingly, he signed a contract with the organization in 2020,

and this is the last year of that deal.

Although it was anticipated that Dallas would not offer McCarthy a contract extension before to the start of the season, nothing is ever really off the table with this team.

ESPN revealed on Saturday afternoon that McCarthy will start the season in a contract year, so you can put any concerns to rest.

According to league sources who spoke to ESPN,

Mike McCarthy will coach the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 under a contract that expires and is not likely to obtain any kind of extension.

There have been speculations about whether McCarthy’s contract could be changed in any way,

even if it was merely to add one more year,

ever after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed last week that McCarthy would return in 2024.

In short, the answer is no.

Jones is counting on McCarthy’s contract expiring in 2024 because he thinks that a person in the final year of a contract is challenged in a new way and that this typically brings out the best in people.

Although this is not groundbreaking information,

it is important that it be acknowledged. By forcing McCarthy to start the season with his career on the line and by bringing him back,

the Cowboys have made two decisions.

There are others who would contend that this is advantageous because Mike and the team might perform better as a result of the intense circumstances.

The counterargument to that is that Jerry Jones’ handling of McCarthy’s predecessor,

Jason Garrett, shows how this scenario always creates distractions.

Garrett was forced into a contract year by Dallas twice in a row.

The Cowboys performed admirably in 2014,

finishing 12-4 and winning the Wild Card before falling to Mike McCarthy’s Packers in the Dez Caught ItTM️ game. However,

they utterly failed the second time around in 2019,

which resulted in his departure and the start of the McCarthy era.

ESPN’s sources appear to think that the latter school of thinking may also play a role.

According to the report:

Given that McCarthy will be entering the final year of his contract,

several league insiders speculate that he may find it more difficult to fill positions on his coaching staff.

Others claim that McCarthy’s decision not to extend might cast a shadow over the club amid trying times.

If the 2024 season is not going well, some other sources wonder how the Cowboys players will respond when McCarthy’s contract status becomes known later in the season.

It should go without saying that this will definitely happen.

Obviously, it remains to be seen how the Cowboys react to it. History indicates it won’t be successful.
