Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stuck with Mike McCarthy as head coach after learning he would NOT be able to convince Bill Belichick to move to Dallas this offseason
After learning last offseason that he would not be able to persuade Bill Belichick to go to Dallas,
team owner Jerry Jones made the decision to retain head coach Mike McCarthy—at least for the next campaign.
McCarthy went through multiple iterations of pitching his belief that the Cowboys can achieve a postseason success
that has eluded the team for almost thirty years on Thursday. A day earlier,
it was announced that McCarthy would return for a fifth season, despite an unexpected loss to Green Bay in the wild
card round.
After the Dallas Cowboys’ poor performance in the NFL playoffs, owner Jerry Jones made the unfortunate decision
to retain incumbent coach Mike McCarthy on the payroll to lead the team for at least one more year,
an exclusive source informed DailyMail.com.
Many believed that Mike was practically dismissed, but Jerry Jones quickly discovered that he would not be getting
Bill Belichick,
which is the main reason that isn’t the case.
Jerry received a response from Bill’s representatives stating that Billy would not have interviewed for the Cowboys’
position nor would he accept a job offer.
When Belichick’s mentor Bill Parcells managed the Cowboys,
he realized he wouldn’t have the authority and control he desired to lead the team in the way he desired, so he made
the decision to not be a candidate fairly immediately.
Jerry Jones ‘would have fired’ Mike McCarthy had Bill Belichick wanted to coach the Cowboys
Jones fired Belichick’s mentor Bill Parcells in 2006 after three seasons as Cowboys head coach
Jerry Jones would have fired Mike McCarthy in a heartbeat if Belichick had made himself available,
since Jones will stop at nothing to help the Cowboys win another Super Bowl.
After winning the NFC East, the Cowboys enjoyed a 16-game winning streak and would get to play at least twice at
home in the postseason.
They were eliminated as the first No. 2 seed to go to the final squad in a conference since the 14-team structure was
implemented in 2020.
However, it’s no secret that Belichick, who leaves the Patriots as one of the best head coaches in history and with six
Super Bowl titles under his belt, is eager to return to the field.
After George Halas (40 years), Curly Lambeau (29), and Tom Landy (29), his 24-year stay as a coach in New
England is sixth longest in history.
Seven years after he orchestrated the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history with a certain Tom Brady,
the Atlanta Falcons are scheduled to have a second interview with Coach Belichick on Saturday.
The Patriots were behind 28-3 to Atlanta going into the fourth quarter.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh have also been
questioned by the Falcons.
The Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Chargers have also indicated interest in
Belichick.
In his more than twelve years as the Packers’ head coach, McCarthy was the winner of a Super Bowl and attended
three further NFC title games.
Jones hired him in 2020 for this reason, having watched Jason Garrett’s teams lose in the divisional round for the
previous ten years.
Dallas last advanced to the NFC championship game in 1995, when they won their fifth and final Super Bowl
championship.
There’s just so much history McCarthy can take,
even though he has to embrace being the coach of the first team to have three straight 12-win playoff seasons and not
make it to the conference finals.
McCarthy declared, “I’m not going to take any responsibility. I spoke with the players,
and they are not responsible for anything that has happened here in the more than 20 years prior to this point.”
