The NFL’s oldest roster, measured in one statistic, is that of the New Orleans Saints.

Each year, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell publishes his snap-weighted age rating,

which is based on a team’s average age as determined by players who saw regular playing time.

And the Saints won the championship for the second straight year. The average age of the Saints this season was 28.2 years old.

According to Barnwell, New Orleans possessed the second-oldest defence and the oldest offence in the league.

Mickey Loomis, the general manager of the Saints, didn’t appear to mind, though.

At his season-ending press conference, Loomis showed no signs of weakness despite the age of New Orleans’ roster.

“No, listen, I see some of those stats sometimes and I think, look, you got to look at the core of your team, you got to look beyond whatever the raw number is,” Loomis remarked. And look, that may be skewed by a few guys. We’re a veteran club, so I don’t consider that. Actually, I don’t.

With key players like Derek Carr, Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, and Taysom Hill in their early to mid-30s, the Saints certainly have an ageing roster. While some of them are having successful seasons—Davis was selected to the second team of the All-Pro team—others seem to be struggling. In 2023, Jordan and the elderly (28 years old) Alvin Kamara had possibly the worst years of their careers.

Loomis commented, “Cam Jordan was productive for more than half of the season despite basically playing on one leg due to a high-ankle sprain.” “Age is just a number. The performance is very important. Additionally, I appreciate a few of these young men who came by themselves. Carl Granderson, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor. I am able to list numerous players.

Although he was not aware of Barnwell’s most recent ranking, Loomis stated that there is typically a 12- to 13-month gap between the oldest and youngest teams. However, in this instance, the difference in age between the Saints and the Green Bay Packers (25.7), the youngest team, was found to be 2½ years.

“It’s not like we have two teams, one with a lot of players who are 35 years old and the other with a lot of players who are 23 years old,” Loomis remarked.
