Packers Expected to Trade Fourth and Second Round Picks for $72 Million DT
Over the past two seasons, the Green Bay Packers have outperformed expectations in the trade of Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers, and the upcoming offseason may see the team start to bolster its roster with elite players once again.
On Tuesday, January 16, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report forecast that in the upcoming months, Green Bay will consider both the trade market and free agency before making a deal for defensive tackle Jonathan Allen of the Washington Commanders.
Allen was selected to the Pro Bowl two seasons in a row in 2021 and 2022.
This season, Allen’s output decreased slightly from the 7.5 and 9 sacks he had the two years before. Instead, he totaled 5.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus nevertheless assessed the defensive tackle as a pass rusher far above average for his position, and his contributions to that area of the defense could help players like Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, the team’s outside linebackers.
Allen has a $72 million, four-year contract that is in its second year. But for the last two seasons of the contract, his base pay is only $29.5 million. For a Packers team that as of Wednesday had $8 million in projected salary cap space for 2024, it makes him more cheap.
Over the past two offseasons, the Packers have been more sellers than buyers on the trade market, amassing draft picks. Under first-year starting quarterback Jordan Love, the youngest offense in the NFL has found its feet. The offensive side of the ball has benefited greatly from the scheme.
Without a doubt, the front office in Green Bay is getting ready for the trade market and free agency, which begin on March 13. The team’s season isn’t quite over, though.
Love and the Packers will travel to AT&T Stadium on Saturday to play the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers. On Friday, they will defeat the No. 2-seeded Dallas Cowboys by a score of 48-32.
