Jerry Jones releases statement on decision to retain Mike McCarthy for 2024 season
In 2024, the Dallas Cowboys will formally bring Mike McCarthy back.
Jerry Jones issued a comment regarding the choice following ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s report that the intention was to keep him for the upcoming campaign.
Following the Cowboys’ defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, in which they trailed 48-16 at one point in the game,
concerns were raised regarding McCarthy’s future.
After the playoffs’ expansion in 2020,
Dallas was the first team to fall to a No. 7 seed going into the game as the NFC’s No. 2 seed.
Jones asserted that McCarthy remains safe notwithstanding the sad conclusion.
In a long statement released on Wednesday night, he outlined his motivations.
“I think this team is very close and capable of reaching our ultimate goals,
and having Mike McCarthy as our head coach will be the best step forward for us,” Jones stated.
“It is highly advantageous for the team to keep improving under Mike’s direction as our head coach.
In particular,
Mike’s style of team leadership has resulted in numerous levels of success this season for both our team as a whole and individual players.
We will work together with Mike,
who has the greatest regular season winning % of any Cowboys head coach in history, to“Further,
our loss on Sunday is shared by everyone here, not just Coach McCarthy. Our players.
Our coaches. Our front office. Myself.
There is accountability for our results.
I am accountable for our results.
The lens we use to view and evaluate Coach McCarthy is holistic.
While we’re all disappointed with the result on Sunday and with our playoff record,
I am 100 percent supportive of him as our head coach and ability to reach our goals.
We will start our process of review and decision making regarding everything that impacts our team and roster and,
while we’re not going to address specific players and extensions or free agents at this point,
it deserves our deepest review and consideration, and it will get it.”McCarthy,
who just completed his fourth season with the Cowboys, led the group to a 12-5 result for the third time in a row.
After defeating the Philadelphia Eagles,
the defending NFC champion, Dallas finished with an NFC East championship.
However, playoff success has proved elusive.
Before the Packers dominated them inside AT&T Stadium,
the San Francisco 49ers had already upset the Cowboys in 2021 and 2022.
The 2024 season marks McCarthy’s contract’s expiration. Jason Garrett, McCarthy’s predecessor,
was likewise permitted to coach for one more year before ending his employment with the team following the 2019 campaign.
As soon as the game ended, there were rumors that he wouldn’t return for the 2024 campaign.
Jones acknowledged that the defeat was among the biggest surprises in his sporting history.
