‘Cowboys Continuity’: ‘Hot-Seat’ Coach McCarthy Keeps Job
FRISCO: Everything seemed in place for the Dallas Cowboys to have a successful postseason run. All of that didn’t matter; they were playing an inexperienced team at home with all of their available players healthy.
It’s also clear that the humiliating 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers didn’t “matter”—at least not in terms of Mike McCarthy’s job security. The coach is remaining, maybe to help with the issues that also don’t appear to be going away.
“This loss is painful,” McCarthy remarked on Sunday. “We had a fantastic opportunity to play a home playoff game
because we put ourselves in that position. We were pleased with our week of preparation and believed that we
matched up nicely. It’s obvious that we chose the incorrect day to be miserable. It’s intriguing how you put it in that
way. It might be taken to mean that the coach is indicating that this was a “fluke.” Perhaps this is the reason Jerry
Jones isn’t firing McCarthy over it.
In actuality, Dallas’ day wasn’t only “bad.” It was disastrous and might have had a large-scale effect. As an
alternative? Cowboys are going to run it back. And a “accident”? That would make three years in a row that
postseason “flukes” have occurred. We said in jest that McCarthy would have to have a “50-0 football disaster” in
order to be dismissed. That defeat effectively ruined McCarthy’s third consecutive 12-5 season.
Even so, a “50-0 football disaster” was insufficient to compel reform. Thus, “continuity” is achieved. You also obtain
“stability.” All that’s left is “hope.”
