New Patriots HC Jerod Mayo in introduction: I’m ‘not trying’ to be Bill Belichick

On Wednesday, the Patriots welcomed Roderick Mayo as their first Black head coach, making history.

As the guy considered to succeed Bill Belichick, he will always have a special place in the annals of the New England team.

He spent eight seasons as a player for Belichick and five years working for him,

so he has a deep understanding of New England customs and procedures.

He’s still his own man, though. And he has no intention of becoming an exact replica of the renowned coach.

Indeed, this organization has enjoyed great success over a long period of time. In addition, there are numerous teams that had one successful season before going out of business for three,”

Mayo stated on Wednesday at his inaugural press conference.

“Just surrounding yourself with good people is one thing Coach and Thunder (Patriots owner Robert Kraft) taught me.

“We’re going to be good, we’re going to be much better, as far as our staff and other things go.

Bill now says “managing expectations” all the time. I’m not attempting to be Bill, at least not in my own eyes.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I believe Bill is a guy on his own; I’m even a little different up here.

However, I will add that the more I consider the things I’ve learned from Bill, it seems like hard work pays off.

Work ethic pays off. And that’s our main goal together.”After the Patriots’ worst season in thirty years,

they parted ways with Belichick, and they have a lot of work ahead of them. Mayo is filling the enormous void left by Belichick,

who oversaw all coaching aspects, had complete command over personnel decisions, and owned all football operations.
