Cowboys’ Likely Decision on Mike McCarthy’s Future Revealed by Insider

According to several insiders, Mike McCarthy will, at the very least,

rejoin the Dallas Cowboys as head coach in 2024.

According to The Athletic’s Jon Machota, McCarthy staying on as the team’s coach for

the upcoming season is the most likely scenario, citing his prior record of making decisions.

In an article titled “Why you shouldn’t be surprised if Jerry Jones sticks with Mike McCarthy for another season,”

published on January 17, 2024, Machota stated that there

hasn’t been any cause to believe otherwise over the previous three or twenty-eight years.

However, Jerry believed that bringing McCarthy back for

the last year of his contract could maintain order in the building,

the dressing room and on offense.

McCarthy’s departure would likely result in a whole new coaching staff.

And for Jerry, who turned 81 in October, that is probably too dangerous of an undertaking.

Early indicators suggest that the Cowboys are getting ready for fans to see

McCarthy on the sidelines for the upcoming season.

The longer it goes without a statement, the less probable it seems that McCarthy will be fired by the Cowboys.

Dallas’s ownership would prefer to replace McCarthy as soon as possible considering

that other teams are also in the process of selecting a new head coach.

It is a little unexpected that McCarthy would return to Dallas considering

the availability of elite coaches like Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick.

McCarthy has won 12 games in a row, but in his four years in Dallas, he has only won one playoff game.

What is particularly concerning is how the Cowboys fell to the Packers 48–32.

McCarthy is safe, according to the Cowboys’ prior performance,

but Ed Werder of ESPN notes that predictions are not always accurate.

“Nobody can accurately predict the decision of the Cowboys owner who moved on from Jimmy Johnson after back-

to-back Super Bowl wins and yet had the patience for nearly a decade of Jason Garrett,”

Werder wrote in a message on X on January 17.

“Regarding Jerry Jones and what might happen once he meets with Mike McCarthy.”

In recent years, the Cowboys have been cautious during free agency,

even though Jones has a reputation for taking chances.

The group usually chooses to shop for deals rather than go large game hunting.

Dallas has also approached the NFL draft sensibly.

Machota concludes that McCarthy’s tenure as the Cowboys’ head coach is likely to continue.

“One of the league’s best rosters, with players like Martin, Micah Parsons,

CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, Tyler Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyron Smith, DaRon Bland, and Trevon Diggs,

has been built by playing it safe in the draft and free agency,” Machota continued.

Thus, it makes sense that they would continue with what has proven effective in that field.

“..That kind of outcome—not merely losing,

but being totally overpowered by the seventh seed—usually prompts important decisions.

Telling your fan base that you’re going to run it back after that outcome is difficult to sell.

“But going in another direction? That’s probably too big of a risk.”
