Skilled’ winger profiled amid conflicting reports emerge about Rangers interest in January deal

Tashreeq Matthews, an IK Sirius star, has been connected to Rangers, although there are conflicting claims regarding a move.

The January transfer window is already halfway over, and the Rangers have only signed one player.

Although Wolverhampton Wanderers’ striker Fabio Silva has joined on loan, Philippe Clement could still want more fresh talent.

There’s little doubt that Rangers supporters would welcome the arrival of another winger, and an intriguing rumour has surfaced.

Only a few days ago, there were reports in South Africa indicating that Rangers was in competition with AZ Alkmaar for IK Sirius winger Tashreeq Matthews.

Rangers aren’t pursuing Matthews this month, according to Scottish rumours, but let’s dig more into the South African and his career to date

Tashreeq Matthews:  the story so far

South African native Matthews began his playing career with Ajax Cape Town, his hometown team.

But, in 2018, without even making a first-team appearance in South Africa, Matthews was acquired by German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund instead of continuing on to associate club Ajax, as happened with Eyong Enoh, Steven Pienaar, and Thulani Serero in previous years.

Matthews failed to make a senior appearance for Dortmund and had two unsatisfactory loan stints at Helsingborgs IF and Jong Utrecht.

After settling in Sweden with Varbergs BoIS in January 2020, Matthews officially left Dortmund, scoring eight goals and dishing out nine assists in sixty games.

In August 2022, Matthews moved once more, this time joining IK Sirius, a Swedish team, where he has truly excelled.

In 45 appearances, the 23-year-old has racked up 13 goals and 10 assists,

making him one of Sweden’s Allsvenskan’s most dangerous players.

“During our brief encounter, I observed that he possesses a unique quality.

He is able to penetrate defences because of his fast thinking and ability to come up with solutions when given the ball.

If he is unable to come up with one, he will use his excellent technique to find a teammate or get past his defender.

Former Ajax Cape Town manager Muhsin Ertugral said,

“That is an exceptional talent and that is what you find in players like Pienaar and Serero,

but he must just be stronger because that is very important in international football.

His weapon is a very quick mind when under pressure.”

“That speaks volumes that he was at Borussia Dortmund.”

He’s a guy who has matured over a good amount of time. Martin Pringle,

sporting director of Varbergs BoIS, said, “He has only risen, risen, and risen.”

“I have witnessed him in a few Swedish matches. Hugo Broos, the manager of South Africa,

said, “He is a talented player, but you can see that he has a little difficulty in the duel game.”

Rangers analysis from Tashreeq Matthews

Matthews moved to Dortmund because he was thought to be a bright talent and

was obviously making an impact in Sweden.

He hasn’t really shown himself outside of Sweden,

though, and the jump from IK Sirius to Rangers is a significant one.

Rangers are reportedly quite interested in Matthews, according to South African reports,

but we choose to believe the Scottish denials.

It would be great to add additional speed and cunning out wide,

but we wouldn’t be shocked to see Matthews here this month.
