Rookie Report Card for the Chicago Bears: DL Dexter Gervon
There were highs and lows during Gervon Dexter’s debut season with the Chicago Bears. Here is an overview of the rookie D-lineman’s performance thus far.
Our rookie report card series is back, and this time around, we’ll be taking a deeper look at Bears’ rookie inside
defensive tackle Gervon Dexter. Dexter, a University of Florida product selected in the second round (at selection No.
53 overall) last season, has appeared in all 17 Chicago games (with one start). There are slight variations in his
numbers depending on where you look. His season totals are listed by Pro Football Reference as follows: 12
quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks, 2 passes defensed, and 20 total tackles (none for loss).
In 297 pass rush snaps and 134 run defense snaps, Dexter recorded 16 total tackles, 16 hurries, 9 quarterback hits, a
batted ball, and 4.0 sacks, according to PFF.
Dexter’s involvement was restricted as a rookie adjusting to a new defense; in no game last season did he play more
than 33 defensive snaps. Like most rookies, he started off to a rough start, but as the season went on, he improved.
He played in a 2-gap strategy at Florida, where he had to be more responsive to the ball. Dexter gets to get his hands
dirty and be significantly more disruptive in Matt Eberflus’s 4-3 defense, where he also has to fill the B-gap (or the A-
gap, depending on alignment). After learning the ins and outs from seasoned players like Justin Jones and Andrew
Billings, he settled in and started to contribute well on the inside. Let’s take a closer look at the highs and lows of
Dexter’s debut season.
