Rangers manager Philippe Clement has tempered Ibrox expectations in an ominous update as supporters eagerly await transfer news.

Heading into the summer transfer window the Belgian manager was clear that he expected the club to be “very active” this January.

The lone addition made by Rangers this transfer window is the 21-year-old striker from Wolves, Fabio Silva, a Portuguese attacker who will be loaned to the team for the remainder of the season.

In spite of this, Rangers have been connected to multiple transfer possibilities this winter, and at the team’s warm-weather training camp, the Ibrox manager was questioned extensively about the circumstances.

Update on Philippe Clement’s move

Speaking following the 1-0 friendly loss to Hertha Berlin, during which the Belgian coach lost his cool on the sidelines, Clement would not discuss transfers.

However, in a pretty depressing update, the remarks don’t exactly seem like they come from a man who is sure he will obtain what he needs to strengthen the team come January.

“Everyone is putting in a lot of effort to sign players,” Clement said to the Rangers Review.

Finding the appropriate players to complement the team is more important than (simply) adding players for the sake of adding players.

“So January is always a difficult period in that way and everybody is working really hard in the club to get that.”

When asked if he is expecting to sign players this January, Clement said: “Yeah I expect, everybody expects, and everybody is working really hard for that.”

Then pressed on how many players Rangers could sign this window: “No (I can’t put a figure on it) because I know out of my experience that you never get everything that you want, not one club.

January Rangers expectations tempered

Whilst Philippe Clement didn’t give much away with regards potential transfer interest, you’ll forgive fans for feeling like we’re being prepped for disappointment.

That old adage about January being a tough window continues to ring true and ironically this is amongst the most revealing transfer soundbites we’ve ever had from big Phil.

Heading into the window the Ibrox manager didn’t flinch when asked about incomings and outgoings but reading between the lines is a little easier here.

Obviously it’s clear that Rangers still expect to do transfer business but by the sounds of things it hasn’t been quite as easy as Philippe Clement would’ve hoped.

Let’s hope the team finds the proper players in the window and that the remarks are meant as a last resort.

Rangers is still rumored to be considering a left-back acquisition as they could get ready to lose Ridvan Yilmaz. David Jurasek, a standout for Benfica, is the most recent candidate to be floated for the role.

Additionally, given that Rangers will be losing Abdallah Sima to the AFCON and that Danilo and Kemar Roofe are presently out with no indication of when they will return, it is thought that a striker is still very much

on the team’s wish list.
