Josh Doig is coming from Marseille, and Verona has until TODAY to agree to a contract. This move could have significant transfer implications for Rangers.

After spending the previous 18 months in Serie A, 21-year-old Scottish left-back Doig has reportedly agreed to a personal transfer worth €5 million (£4.3 million) to join the Ligue 1 team.

This might be the first of many transfers as current club Verona is also heavily linked to a move for Rangers left-back Ridvan Yilmaz as a replacement.

However, the most recent information regarding Josh Doig’s possible transfer to Marseille indicates that, barring Verona’s approval, the move may not happen by midnight.

Marseille issued a warning to Josh Doig.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Marseille has threatened to “move on another target” if a Josh Doig deal is not reached before today’s end of play.

Verona has received a warning from Marseille, who is obviously not playing around, that if a deal cannot be reached today, they will move on to another target.

Despite rumors that the former Hibs star wants to transfer to Ligue 1, Verona is reportedly pressuring Doig to move to Sassuolo instead because their Serie A rivals are willing to pay up to €6m (£5.1m).

Romano claims that the transaction is almost final, and the Ligue 1 team is on the verge of receiving €20 million (£17 million) from the transfer of Renan Lodi to Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League.

Rangers left-back transfer pursuit impacted

The impact on Rangers should any Josh Doig to Marseille deal collapse is two-fold.

First, Rangers boss Philippe Clement has been evasive about the player’s status this weekend, leading Verona to believe that they are waiting to sign Ridvan Yilmaz to replace the youthful Scottish left-back.

That Rangers move may fall through unless Verona could then sell Josh Doig to Sassuolo, which is unlikely considering the player’s obvious desire to move to Marseille.

Second, David Jurasek, a Czech international left back for Benfica, has also been connected to Marseille. Rangers are reportedly considering Jurasek as a potential replacement for Ridvan Yilmaz.

It appears more likely than not that Alvaro Fernandez, a £12 million former Slavia Prague star, will be leaving the Estadio de Luz in January as Benfica approaches Manchester United for the player.

The Portuguese media has mentioned Marseille and Rangers as possible suitors, though there may be more interested parties.

Should a Josh Doig trade fall through, Marseille might focus on David Jurasek, Rangers would lose Ridvan Yilmaz to Verona nevertheless, and all of a sudden the Ibrox team would be lacking a left-back.

Even while everything is probably going to come to a head soon, we think there may still be a few more twists and turns to come.
