Hearts open talks for new Lawrence Shankland contract as Rangers want January transfer

Hearts have formally started negotiations with Lawrence Shankland on a new deal as they attempt to stave off Rangers’ interest this month.

Although Hearts have “no intention” of letting him go this month until they receive an offer of many million pounds that they can’t turn down,

Rangers have been eager to bring him to the group at Ibrox.

Hearts want to lock Shankland down to a lengthier deal because Rangers and other English Championship clubs are keeping an eye on him, they said.

“We anticipate that talks will continue in the upcoming weeks.

Hearts want to secure third place in the Premiership between now and May,

hence they have no intention of selling Shankland during the current transfer window.

“That would only change if they received an offer they couldn’t turn down,

and that offer would need to be for several million pounds.”

Shankland won’t sign that contract if he has common sense and is sincere about wanting to spend his best years of playing at Ibrox.

Even though he has less than 18 months left on his contract,

the Hearts are demanding a hefty amount to allow him to depart.

He is currently 28 years old and getting ready for the biggest contract of his career.

Since no one could offer them the money they want when his contract position isn’t as perilous,

he is virtually announcing that he plans to retire at Hearts by signing a new agreement.

If this is the case,

Rangers need to be ready to move on to other targets because the team cannot afford to put all of its eggs in one basket just to be disappointed and left with no other options.

It’s undoubtedly a setback for the plans, but if Philippe Clement and the board are ready,

it shouldn’t be a significant enough obstacle to closing a purchase or moving forward.
