The Los Angeles Chargers have finally, formally spoken with current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken about their head coaching job, days after first seeking an interview, according to Omar Navarro of Chargers.com.

For decades, Monken has alternated between NFL and collegiate football games. He served as the Georgia Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for three years, from 2020 to 2022.

In his first campaign, the Ravens finished fourth in the league in points scored per game (28.9), first in the league in running yards per game (156.5), and sixth in total yards per game (370.4).

Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Pro Bowl and the league’s presumed MVP, had what may have been his best season to date. He recorded a career-high 3,678 throwing yards in 16 games, in addition to over 800 rushing yards as a running quarterback.

Monken has also had successful NFL careers as the wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively.

Monken was a candidate for the Broyles Award in 2022, which is given to the best assistant coach in a college football game of the season. He made it to the finals.

Monken appears to have the potential to improve Justin Herbert and his team’s performance, but the offensive group surrounding the 6’6″ Pro Bowl quarterback has looked undeveloped.
