Green Bay’s Season May Depend On A Highly-Paid Superstar’s Presence
After an exciting season, the Green Bay Packers have advanced to the postseason. On Sunday, they are the underdogs going to Jerry World. They’re not just entering the game with extreme intensity, but it’s difficult to recall a previous
instance in which they lost to the Dallas Cowboys. However, seven-seeds are 0-6 with a -73 point difference since the
NFL expanded to a 14-team postseason in 2020.
Vegas is actively supporting that storyline in spite of Green Bay’s strong late-season performance. Dallas deserves
credit for playing excellent football the entire season. It took until Thanksgiving morning for Jordan Love and the
rest of Matt LaFleur’s offense to find their rhythm. However, it’s tempting to compare the Packers before and after
November as two different teams.
The Cowboys are seven-point favorites according to the bookies, and the Packers have an expected probability of
only 27% to win. Among the principal causes? Star receiver CeeDee Lamb of Dallas has been playing at a high level
lately, almost matching Miami Dolphins speedster Tyreek Hill thanks to his rampant play in the final stretch.
Together, the two have produced the league’s top receiving campaigns. The media has been covering Hill for the
entire season. On the other hand, Lamb’s coming-out party has forced us all to start talking about him when
discussing the elite in the league.
It’s reasonable to argue that the defense has a disproportionate amount of control over the result of this game given
how far Matt LaFleur’s offense has progressed. Lamb has a big matchup ahead of him. The outcome of his matchup
with Packers CB Jaire Alexander will determine how the game is played. Either he will make it nearly difficult for Joe
Barry to keep up, or he will cut his job in half.
Outcome of Alexander’s heavyweight battle remains uncertain
Alexander, a well-liked celebrity in the game, has had an odd season marred with unclear injuries and one of the
funniest bans you’ll ever witness. Additionally, he has demonstrated his ability to stop receivers who are thought to
be unbeatable. Most notably, he stopped Justin Jefferson in a game that the team had to win last season.
I wish I could say that the outcome of Alexander’s heavyweight battle remains uncertain. He put his fate for Sunday
in jeopardy by skipping practice on Thursday as well. The novel condition was described by LaFleur as “kind of a
freak deal…stepped on someone’s foot and rolled an ankle.” It’s difficult to overstate the possible cascading effects of
that anomaly. In place of Alexander, the Packers have been using rookie Carrington Valentine, selected in the
seventh round.
Big and strong, he has excelled well beyond his draft position as a cornerback. However, if he is forced to take on the
Lamb job, things can get difficult. A disaster class taught by Joe Barry with a soft zone feels like an equal-bit harsh
death sentence.
With Valentine’s Day falling on Michael Gallup’s profile and Keisean Nixon’s potential to run with Brandin Cooks,
this is the ideal week for a plan with a lot of men. But that all gets thrown out of whack if Alexander sits. It will
require at least one of the Packers’ best defensive efforts of the year to emerge from there with an upset win. That
option flows through CB1, along with all of its benefits.
Lamb is predicted by Vegas to go 100 yards.
There are a few universes where that number looks like child’s play, even though Alexander could have the over bettors in torture chambers if you know anything about Green Bay.
In terms of the attack, they should presumably prepare to lift a lot of weight. Recent events indicate they might not
be too bothered about that. Their performance was not commensurate with the 17 points they scored the previous
week; Love completed more than 87% of his passes for 316 yards and two scores. That is a blatant sign that the red
zone is where they need to execute.
For the previous three weeks, almost every drive has appeared good. Romeo Doubs and Bo Melton missed
opportunities to increase quarterback Ryan Love’s touchdown total last week by just a hair. The season might end if
you miss out on those this week.
The market also believes that Sunday will provide some points. The 50.5 game total is only surpassed by the 51.5
game totals of Los Angeles and Detroit. It feels like the Packers’ season, Barry’s future, and the position of their next
first-round defender (safety is currently a heavy favorite) all depend on how many points they give up. And Jaire
Alexander is the foundation of that.
He’s a franchise player, and they’re paying him like one. In these situations, you anticipate players like him, Kenny
Clark, and Rashan Gary to have a significant impact. Unlike any other player in the league, Alexander exudes an
aura. Will it be sunglasses and cigars in the locker room, or street clothes, soft zones, and excuses?
