Aston Villa against. Everton probable lineup: Five changes due to uncertainty around the £32 million defender
While the form guide seems to favor Unai
Emery’s team, Aston Villa may need to play
without up to seven first-team players in order
to defeat an Everton team that has lost their
last five games.
Villa will be looking for their third straight
victory when they visit Goodison Park on
Sunday afternoon.
There are serious concerns about Pau Torres
and Youri Tielemans’ fitness in addition to the
harm caused by chronic injuries and Bertrand
Traoré’s absence due to the Africa Cup of
Nations.
Since the two teams have already played twice
this season—Aston Villa lost 2-1 at home in the
EFL Cup third round after falling 4-0 at Villa
Park in the league—they are aware that Sean
Dyche’s team is not to be taken lightly,
especially if key players are out.
We’ve compiled all of the most recent team
news and injury updates for you below, along
with our best bet for the starting lineup the
Villans will use this weekend when they visit
Merseyside.
Defense & Goalkeeper
Spanish center-half Torres was benched
against Burnley in Villa’s final league game, but
he paid a price for it. Torres missed two games
in December due to an ankle injury he received
against Brentford. Torres was left out of the
squad for the FA Cup third round victory at
Middlesbrough because, according to Emery,
“at the end of the match he was feeling worse
than before.”
Although Torres hasn’t been updated since
Emery stated before the game at the Riverside
that he thought he would be ready to play
against Everton, it is assumed that he will be
eligible to play at least a portion of the game.
But Lucas Digne, who hurt his hamstring during
the Boxing Day loss to Manchester United, will
most likely miss out. While Robin Olsen is still
sidelined with an undisclosed knock, he should
return in early February. Little is known about
the goalie’s health in the public domain, but it
doesn’t seem like he has started training again.
A knee ligament injury has kept Tyrone Mings
out of action for an extended period of time.
midfield
Summertime acquisition Tielemans hasn’t
played since sustaining a calf injury during the
1-0 victory over Arsenal in December, but he
was expected to return to training this week.
Emery has not yet stated if he will play, and it
doesn’t appear probable that he will start.
Emiliano Buendía, on the other hand, is still
sidelined due to a significant knee injury,
although he may be back in the gym next
month.
The Premier League season has seen only 10
minutes of action from Winger Traoré, and he
won’t be playing any more for a few weeks at
least as he has joined the Burkina Faso side for
the AFCON 2024 in the Ivory Coast. If the
Burkinabe team advances far in the
tournament, he might not return until
mid-February, missing at least two games.
They will be optimistic about their chances of
making it to the knockout stages when they
take on Algeria, Angola, and Mauritania in the
group stage.
Moving Forward
Since Ollie Watkins, Moussa Diaby, and Jhon
Durán all believed to be healthy, Emery will be
able to choose from a variety of attacking
players to use in the middle of the park.
Although Watkins is probably going to remain
in the starting lineup, Colombian Durán scored
one of Villa’s four goals in the team’s opening
matchup against Everton this season.
Predicted lineup for Aston Villa versus Everton
Martínez; McGinn, Luiz, Kamara, Zaniolo; Diaby,
Watkins; Moreno, Carlos, Konsa, Cash.
