After an AFCON development is revealed, Rangers might not be on high alert any more.
Following the revelation of Cyriel Dessers’ AFCON progress, Rangers might no longer be on high alert.
Rangers are already experiencing some selection headaches this season because to Abdallah Sima’s departure to the
Ivory Coast to play for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sima has been away from the Light Blues’ winter training camp and may miss multiple Rangers games as Philippe
Clement has his team ready for the second part of the Scottish Premiership season.
But since Cyriel Dessers was added to Nigeria’s tournament standby list in case any of the Super Eagles’ forwards
sustained an injury prior to the competition, the Gers have been on “red alert” for the past few days [The Herald, 9
January].
When it was announced that Sadiq Umar had been forced out of Nigeria’s squad due to injury, there would have
been concerns around Ibrox that Dessers would be joining Sima and missing much of the upcoming month of club
games.
Those worries, though, can now be allayed as a report from The Athletic on January 12th stated that Paul Onuachu, a
forward for Trabzonspor, will start ahead of Umar in Nigeria’s tournament roster.
This season, Onuachu, who is on loan from Championship team Southampton to Turkey, has been in outstanding
form. In 14 Super Lig outings, he has scored eight goals, which is a significantly better return than Rangers’ number
nine.
Clement is depending on Dessers
Dessers has received a lot of flak for his subpar play thus far this season. His most recent outings have been
extremely disappointing as he has consistently missed great opportunities to score goals in some of the biggest
games the Gers have played.
The majority of Glasgow’s blue side supporters believe Philippe Clement, who plays at the top of the pitch for
Nigeria, will sign a new forward option before the end of January. However, they can’t afford to lose Dessers till that
time.
Clement is depending on Dessers to lead his line because Sima is gone at the AFCON, Danilo and Kemar Roofe are
all injured, and it would have been disastrous if the 28-year-old had been called up late for the tournament in
January.
Rangers can now perhaps relax knowing that, barring any further injuries to Nigerian players before the tournament
begins, their number nine will be ready after the Christmas break.
