So, what has Paul Merson said about

Douglas Luiz? Let’s take a look.

Paul Merson praises Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

Well, Paul Merson has been raving about

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, a

player who has been linked with Arsenal.

The Sky Sports pundit has said that Luiz

is one of the five most underrated

players in the Premier League.

The former star of Aston Villa and

Arsenal has called attention to Luiz’s

recent growth and improvement in his game.

Since joining Villa in the summer of

2019, Luiz has been a member of the

Manchester City team. For the Brazil

international midfielder, the Villans paid

the Citizens a transfer fee of £15 million (BBC Sport).

“Douglas Luiz is an established

campaigner, so I’m putting him at #5,”

Merson told SportsKeeda of Luiz.

Everyone can now see what he’s all

about because he’s been playing

fantastically for Aston Villa this season. A

year ago, Arsenal wanted to sign him,

but not many thought highly of him.

He can play the role of a holding

midfielder and keep things clean for his

team, but as we’ve seen so frequently

this season, he can also get in the box

and score goals. Although he is still

incredibly underappreciated and well-

rounded, he has begun to receive his fair

amount of attention in the 2023–24 campaign.

“People wouldn’t put him in the same

breath as Declan Rice or Rodri, but based

on their performances this season, I’d

certainly put Luiz up there with the pair.

“With Casemiro and Fabinho past their

best in recent seasons, the ex-Manchester

City midfielder could also become a key

player for Brazil in the years ahead.”
