The newspaper shared via their transfer blog [9 January] that the 18-year-old defender has previously worked with Forest Academy chief Craig Mulholland which may have contributed to the deal.

The tabloid does not reveal the transfer fee; however, Transfermarkt reports that his contract expires in May, which would have given the English team the opportunity to pounce on him before then.

A shame to see him go

It’s never nice to see an academy product leave Ibrox, especially when there are clearly promising signs from him which were enough to tempt a Premier League side into making an offer for his services.

Given that Forest have presented Newton with a two-year deal to move to England, they must see some long-term promise in his ability, and while he will likely slot into their academy side for the time being, the goal will be for him to feature in the first team.

Newton was yet to make a senior appearance in his career for Rangers, but had featured for Rangers B when the reserve side were competing in the Lowland League last season so has experienced a taste away from academy football.

Further details on this move will likely emerge in due course, with a possible transfer fee and whether Rangers made an attempt to keep him at Ibrox the key questions that will be on fans’ lips following this news.
