The bravest call ever made by Rangers legendary icon captures the essence
His winner-take-all mentality and no-nonsense approach helped Rangers to three titles and an incredible
journey to the UEFA Cup Final. Even now, twelve years after departing from Ibrox, Kirk Broadfoot isn’t playing
around with the prospects that await his former team in the upcoming half-year.
The Rangers revolution led by Philippe Clement has amazed Broadfoot, who believes the Light Blues can defeat
all opponents and complete a domestic clean sweep. Furthermore, though—and hang onto your caps, Giants
supporters. According to Broadfoot, if they are fortunate enough to draw in and have momentum, they might
even be able to emulate the feats of his team from 2008 and Gio van Bronckhorst’s Euro slayers from 2021 by
making it to another continental final.
That’s how much the 39-year-old values Clement’s contribution to Govan since he was brought in to undo the
harm caused by Michael Beale’s brief leadership. The Belgian may have put an end to Rangers’ 16-game winning
streak under his leadership last week in the Parkhead Old Firm match. But Broadfoot believes Clement can pull
off a spectacular comeback and add the Scottish Cup and Premiership title to the League Cup he already has
stashed away in the trophy cabinet in January with the proper acquisitions.
Asked if the Treble was a genuine target, he said: “I don’t see why not. Rangers should be pushing for the Treble.
The league race will be close as they are evenly matched. But the manager is the right man for the job. You see
the impact he’s already had, going his first 16 games unbeaten. That speaks for itself. And you have to remember
that he’s still to bring in his own players.
“The fact that he already has a trophy in the cabinet is a great place to start. That’s significant for any squad
when a new manager joins the team. Winning any trophy is nice, but at that point in the season, the League Cup
gives you a sense of victory. It may inspire the team to keep going and aim to win additional games.
But the league is the most important one. They will definitely challenge Celtic this year, in my opinion. Though I
believe it will be close, Rangers have the team and the manager to push Celtic all the way to victory.
In March 2007, Broadfoot signed a four-year contract with the late, great Walter Smith. During that time, the
team experienced a thrilling and eventful journey that culminated in the team competing in the 2008 UEFA Cup
final in Manchester.
If Smith was known for eliciting respect from his players, then the 39-year-old, who is currently competing
against Morton in the Championship, perceives the same unyielding resolve in Clement.
Something that was hammered home when, after 30 minutes of the Europa League match against Aris Limassol,
he hooked Todd Cantwell. He seems to have an air about him, observed Broadfoot. It’s evident that the team
values him. Check out the match where, after around thirty minutes, he benched Cantwell. That demonstrates to
you his willingness to make decisions quickly.
“He will drop any player, regardless of identity, if he believes they are not doing their share of the work. You
could see he understood what he was doing before he even came because he had won the title in Belgium.
“I appreciate the way he speaks and works. When Celtic and Ange Postecoglou were up here, I believe it was the
same.
A big factor is a slice of luck in the draw. Rangers have already made their own fortune by winning Group C thus
avoiding the play-off round and going straight into the last 16. And Broadfoot said: “It will be a tough ask, there’s
no getting away from that.
“It’s probably even more difficult now with the quality of teams who are dropping out of the Champions League.
“Back in our day, we played Fiorentina in the semis and in the other was between Bayern Munich and Zenit St
Petersburg, who obviously went on to win it. If anything, it’s got harder but you can never say never. It’s
happened twice in recent times so it’s clearly possible.
“A wee bit of luck in the draw always helps. They beat Borussia Dortmund when they got to the final a couple of
years ago and you would have probably have said they were the favourites to win it outright.
“They are in a habit of winning knockout ties after Christmas and it’s a good habit to be in.
“They may have dropped the Old Firm match, but they bounced back quickly against Kilmarnock. Thus, the club
has an embedded winning attitude.
“The Rangers’ roster is large enough to meet the needs. The fans, in my opinion, also want it. Saying something
like “let’s leave Europe so we can focus on the league” is never a good idea.
“You ought to be battling for the two. They do, in my opinion, have a large enough squad to consider doing that.
