Rangers do not have option to bring international playmaker, 25, to Ibrox this January
Ianis Hagi is on loan from Rangers, and if the team wants to get him back in January, they will have to work out a deal with Alaves.
The 25-year-old Romanian playmaker has no buyout clause in his Rangers contract, thus he is presently spending the rest of the season on loan at the La Liga team.
Loaned out when Michael Beale was in charge at Ibrox, some thought that incoming Belgian manager Philippe Clement might look to recall Ianis Hagi in his first transfer window.
This was a conversation which intensified when leading Rangers fan media Heart & Hand suggested that there was an option in the Romanian’s Alaves contract.
It’s important to stress that the outlet simply said “we can, would be up to boss” when asked if the club could get Hagi back in January.
No loan clause in Ianis Hagi Alaves deal
There hasn’t been much discussion about Ianis Hagi extending his loan with Alaves since Rangers’ arrival in the second half of January.
Football Scotland now assert that this is the result of the loan agreement not having a January return option, meaning Rangers will need to speak with Alaves to get the midfield player back.
Football players often have mid-season loan return clauses in their contracts; Liverpool left-back Owen Beck, who is linked to Rangers, is one example of this. However, it appears that this particular player does not have one.
When Ianis Hagi was healing from a serious cruciate ligament injury, he first orchestrated the loan move out of Ibrox due to a lack of guarantees around playing time.
No suggestion Rangers want return
We should note that whilst the conversation rages around Ianis Hagi and a potential Rangers return, there have been no suggestions inside Ibrox that this is going to happen.
In fact, Philippe Clement stayed true to form by refusing to comment on the situation when pressed by a reporter in the Turkish media.
The offensive midfielder has also stated how happy he is playing in Spain, but the circumstances make it unclear what will happen to Hagi when he rejoins the team this summer.
After suffering a severe knee injury last season, the former KRC Genk player inked a new deal at Ibrox that will keep him with the team until 2026.
