Lawrence Shankland to Celtic transfer non-starter as Rangers ‘allegiances’ cited
Right now, Lawrence Shankland could be
the most productive striker in the nation.
Mark Wilson, nevertheless, doesn’t think
Celtic will be interested in his goal-scoring prowess.
Hearts captain Shanks, 28, has been the
buzz of the January transfer season as
several commentators with Rangers
sympathies have been hyping him for a
move to Ibrox. It is unclear if Philippe
Clement is genuinely interested in the
Scotland international, who has scored
18 goals in 28 games this year. With
under 18 months left on his contract, the
Jambos have not yet received an official
bid for their star player.
But Shankland’s name has unavoidably
come up, since Celtic is also looking for
more firepower. Following his heroics at
Easter Road in the Edinburgh derby last
month, Brendan Rodgers publicly
expressed his love for the former Dundee
United forward, calling him a “fantastic
finisher”. Despite Rodgers’ admiration,
former NBA player Wilson thinks there’s
little possibility the childhood Rangers
fan will wind up in Glasgow’s east end.
He said: “I like Shankland, but I think his
allegiances lie elsewhere. I’m not sure if
he fits Celtic’s model, the way Brendan
wants to play. I think he’d suit Rangers, a real goalscorer.
“Because Brendan is familiar with that
market, I believe he will move south. I
don’t particularly like the idea of a loan
move, but at this point it may be a loan
move with a buyout option. It will be fascinating.
