Ibrox View: Bennett must find cash for £5m+ transfer as rival president talks emerge

Even though Scotland is on winter break, there is a lot of chatter about Rangers right now as Philippe Clement wants

to bolster his squad for the second half of the campaign.

Even if the Light Blues are now second in the Scottish Premiership, the Belgian needs to make the appropriate roster

additions because should the Gers win their games in hand, they might catch Celtic at the top of the standings by two points.

Josh Doig, a left back for Hellas Verona, is one name that has been frequently mentioned in relation to a midseason

transfer to Glasgow.

The Light Blues have made an attempt to sign the 21-year-old, according to a report in The Daily

Record on January 1. However, it is unclear if they will be able to pay the £5.5 million asking price.

Rangers may need to move quickly, though, as rivals are already circling the former Hibernian man, should Clement

be eager to finalize this deal before another team scoops up his services.

With negotiations between the club increasing, Doig’s “intermediary” was reportedly present at Torino’s match against Napoli on Sunday, January 7, according to Italian site Toro (8 January).

Doig’s agent, Paolo Bursardo, met with the president of Torino to talk about goals, contractual matters, and much

more as the player and Torino continue their negotiations in anticipation of a possible transfer.

Rangers, under Clement, are in need of a new left-back since the Belgian can only use Borna Barisic, whose deal at

Ibrox ends at the end of the season, and Ridvan Yilmaz, who has been linked to leaving the team in January.

Gianluca Di Marzio, a journalist for Sky Sports, revealed on Saturday, January 6, that Yilmaz is expected to sign a

contract with Verona during the Premier League’s winter break, snatching a transfer away from Ibrox.

Doig cannot escape John Bennett and James Bisgrove’s grasp, otherwise Clement will be left without nearly enough

depth or talent at left back to challenge Celtic for the Premiership.

The Light Blues must intervene and attempt to ensure the Scotsman’s long-term future before talks between Torino

and the 21-year-old get too far along, but they must move swiftly.

Even though it might turn out to be a costly transaction, the Gers won’t allow this obvious opportunity pass them by

without a fight, and Ibrox management might just have to pay for it.
