Cyriel Dessers could hand Rangers
further AFCON headache as striker ‘on
standby’ after Nigeria injury With Danilo
sidelined due to injury,
Rangers’ attacking options may be
further limited if Cyriel Dessers ends up
missing the tournament. The 29-year-old
was first left out of Jose Peseiro’s group
for the tournament after being named in
the preliminary squad but then cut from
the final group. However, a groin tear for
Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface
could change things. Dessers has
reportedly been placed on standby for
the Nigeria squad. Rangers could face yet
another AFCON headache after learning
that he has been placed on standby for the Nigeria squad.
Terem Moffi, a striker for Nice, has been
selected the preferred replacement, but
as the call-up came after the formal cut-
off date, the French team is not required
to release him from his club obligations.
Furthermore, if Nice doesn’t let their guy
go, reports from Germany indicate that
the German player will be the next in line.
A statement from the Nigerian Football
Association stated: “Terem Moffi has
been called as a replacement, but that is
subject to his club allowing him to be released for Afcon.”
Since joining the Rangers in the summer,
Dessers’ performances have come under
fire; his output is thought to be below average.
