Outstanding deal: A senior official discloses the striker Rangers hope to sign in January.
Temporary Prior to moving to Groningen, Kevin van Veen, a target for Rangers, desired to remain in Scotland, according to Motherwell CEO Derek Weir.
On January 8, The Daily Record revealed that the 32-year-old was being linked to a return to Scotland to play for
Rangers. But nothing seems to be happening as of yet, and he’s still in the Netherlands.
“That was a challenging situation,” he remarked. When the CEO of Groningen visited my office in April, it was very
evident that they considered Kevin as essential to their hopes of returning to the top division of Dutch football. They
intended to present him with an excellent contract offer. After turning down several proposals for a good while, we
finally accepted one. The challenge in that case stemmed from Kevin’s well-documented personal circumstances,
which included his strong desire to stay in Scotland.
“We did present him an offer, but the truth of the matter was that we were unable to get close. I’d be shocked if he
weren’t earning at least twice as much as our highest-paid player.
Not required
Rather than a clear desire from Rangers, the player and his representatives appear to be the main forces behind the
apparent interest in van Veen.
Given his favorable reception while at Motherwell, this could be a calculated effort on the part of the Dutchman to
attract attention and possibly secure a return to Scotland.
But, considering the depth and caliber of their attacking lineup following Fabio Silva’s arrival, the Gers might decide
to focus on other positions entirely.
The club’s management might think that with the riches at their disposal, they can acquire more potent strikers or
take care of urgent necessities.
Hopefully, this ends the rumors that he was considering a move to Ibrox, and he should definitely consider his other
choices.
Rangers still have the opportunity to win the title, therefore it remains to be seen if Philippe Clement demands
another striker.
