Chris Sutton is “baffled” by a crucial Celtic position as he determines the club’s January hiring requirements.
Celtic legend Chris Sutton insists his old club still have “a lot of work to do” to become a major force to be reckoned
with again as he highlighted key areas of recruitment that need addressing in January.
The Hoops lead bitter Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers by eight points as they seek a third successive top-flight
crown, but the Ibrox side have two games in hand as they look to narrow the gap after the winter break
This season, Brendan Rodgers’ team has been inconsistent at times. They have lost to Kilmarnock and Hearts in
the league and have allowed the Gers to reclaim the crown by dropping further points against St Johnstone and
Motherwell at home.
The team’s triumph over the Old Firm to close out 2023 has undoubtedly improved spirits at Parkhead, but Sutton
believes there is still room for improvement in a number of areas of the field and wonders if the club will choose to
spend big this month on high-profile additions.
Sutton gave a brief summary of Celtic’s season opening performance to Sky Sports, saying: “I think there are still
question marks.” None of us can deny that Europe was a huge disappointment. Comparing this club to Ange
Postecoglou’s squad, where Celtic were quick and fierce, demonstrates the league’s instability. There have been
moments of difficulty this season.
“Brendan Rodgers has discussed the need to bring in players of a higher caliber, but he also discussed
comprehending the model at the beginning of the season. Thus, January is definitely one to keep an eye on. Will
they pursue more seasoned players who have done it all before and will come at a hefty financial cost? Celtic still
has a great deal of work ahead of them.”
