According to a rumor, Manchester United has investigated Lille attacker Jonathan David and may make a play for him in January.

Since joining the Premier League in the summer after leaving Atalanta, Rasmus Hojlund has not yet gained any

traction. Rumors have therefore surfaced that Man Utd would sign a new striker to back him, particularly in the

event that Anthony Martial departs.

There’s only so much Man Utd can do financially this month, which has led to connections with a number of lesser-

known targets or more experienced players like Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting of Bayern Munich.

However, a fascinating connection involving a player who will be 24 this month—Jonathan David—has suddenly surfaced.

Man Utd and Aston Villa are reportedly “very interested” in the Canada international, according to

FootballTransfers.

David’s two Premier League suitors are reportedly considering a January transfer for the striker, who is only

committed to Lille till the conclusion of the next campaign.

The fact that he isn’t want to stay at Lille and might be open to moving to the Premier League gives his pursuers an advantage.

It remains to be seen if that drives Lille to sell David in January, but if either Manchester United or Aston Villa can put together a strong enough bid, they could give it a shot.

According to the source, Man Utd already looked into David in the summer when they were hoping to recruit Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur but Bayern Munich won out.

After spending the first two seasons of his professional career with Gent prior to moving to Lille, David is currently in his sixth season with Europe.

He has double digits of goals in all competitions in each of the previous six seasons, including 10 from 23 games this year.

Conversely, no player for Manchester United has yet to hit ten goals this season; only Marcus Rashford and Bruno

Fernandes did so the previous campaign.

To further highlight how dire things are for Man Utd up front, consider this: even though David hasn’t played at his

peak level this season (just half of his goals have come from his 17 Ligue 1 appearances; a hat-trick against amateur

team Golden Lion in the Coupe de France undoubtedly helped his tally), he is still outperforming his teammates

under Erik ten Hag.

He would still have one more goal than Man Utd’s best scorers this season, Scott McTominay and Holgerund, even if

you took away the hat-trick.

Jonathan David is threatened by Aston Villa.

In Aston Villa’s case, things are a little less concerning because Ollie Watkins has scored 14 goals this season and 16

last season.

However, Unai Emery is keen to send Jhon Duran on, so he would be open to incorporating another component into

his attack.

Watkins has also contributed eleven assists this season, so the idea of him teaming up with another dependable goal

scorer could be unsettling for those hoping to prevent Villa from placing in the top four.

In the meantime, AC Milan might be a competitor for David’s signature. The Serie A team’s immediate disadvantage,

though, is David’s preference for a transfer to the Premier League.

It will take time for us to learn whether his true calling is to play for Manchester United, Aston Villa, or anybody else.
