The Golden State Warriors aren’t about

to give up easily or fade away. Even

though they are struggling this season—

they are now in 11th place with a losing

record and no clear solutions in sight—

this is a proud team with a large trophy

collection. They aren’t scared to take

risks and suffer in order to try and turn

things around and give Stephen Curry one more run.

Curry is perhaps the lone untouchable

member on the team. Klay Thompson is

the next person on that list, right? Or is

that already Brandin Podziemski?). It is

possible for anyone else to participate in

a trade. Who will probably be a part of a

future transaction? The solution to that question is fascinating.

Examining the current 14-man roster,

let’s determine which players have the

lowest chance of playing for Golden State

the entire season. Moving up the ladder

until we find the former All-Star most

likely to be involved in a trade, we’ll

begin with the player most likely to be

cut and the only one who may be waived outright.

No. 6: Gui Santos

This could be filed under the heading of

“obvious” for those closely watching the

Warriors and their salary sheet, but Gui

Santos is extremely unlikely to make it

the entire season in Golden State. The

Warriors signed Santos because he was

their cheapest pathway to a 14th player,

and the CBA demanded that they have 14

players on the roster to keep three two-way players.

Santos, a 2022 second-round choice by

the Warriors, agreed to a three-year

contract that had very little guarantees.

The Warriors may easily waive Santos to

create space if they ever have an

unbalanced trade. When a more

desirable player emerges, they’ll

probably just cut him; as the season

progresses, the financial impact of that

gets smaller, and the Warriors could

want to add a veteran who can be used in the postseason.

To his credit, Santos has scored

efficiently and quickly when he has

played. In 22 total minutes stretched

across four garbage times, Santos has put

up 13 points and eight rebounds, good

for 21.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per 36

minutes. It’s possible that he could

develop into a rotation player down the

line, it’s just unlikely the Warriors stick

around to see that development arc to its completion.
