Sources: Draymond Green to rejoin
Warriors on Sun. after reinstatement
SAN FRANCISCO After serving a 12-game
ban, the NBA reinstated Draymond
Green on Saturday. According to sources
that spoke with ESPN’s Adrian
Wojnarowski, the forward for the Golden
State Warriors would likely need to ramp
up for about a week before playing again.
After being absent from the team while
serving his suspension, Green is expected
to return to the Warriors’ practice facility
on Sunday, according to sources.
On December 14, Green received an
indefinite suspension for hitting Phoenix
Suns center Jusuf Nurkic during a game the day before.
“Green accomplished actions that
showed his dedication to aligning his
behavior with the standards anticipated
of NBA players,” the league stated in a
statement. “He has engaged in meetings
with a counselor and has met jointly on
multiple occasions with representatives
of the NBA, the Warriors and the
National Basketball Players Association,
both of which will continue throughout the season.”
According to Wojnarowski, the group
talks, which took place via video
conference and included Rich Paul, the
CEO of Klutch, Green’s agent, general
manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. of the
Warriors, and team trainer Rick
Celebrini, were a component of what the
NBA called “certain league and team
conditions” that Green had to meet in order to be reinstated.
Following a series of on-court
confrontations involving Green, the
league suggested that the route to
reinstatement be focused on counseling.
Midway through November, Green
choked Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert,
just weeks before he hit Nurkic.
The day following the announcement of
Green’s ban, Warriors coach Steve Kerr
remarked, “That’s the guy who needs to
change—the one who choked Rudy, the
one who took a wild flail at Jusuf, the one
who punched Jordan [Poole] last year.”
“This is more than simply a tantrum on
the court. It concerns his life. It’s about
someone I love for his loyalty, someone
I’ve known for decades, and someone I believe in.”
Green didn’t communicate much with
Kerr or the majority of his teammates while he was abroad.
“He and I valued space,” Kerr remarked
on Thursday. “We’re trying to win games,
and he’s trying to put himself in a position to come back.”
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Green
lost little less than $2 million overall
during the ban, sparing Golden State
over $9 million on their anticipated luxury tax payment.
In the 12 games that Green has been
away from the Warriors, the team has a
7-5 record. When Green isn’t available
(due to an injury or suspension), Golden
State is 10-10 overall this season and is 7-8 in his 15 games played.
Over the following week, Golden State
will visit the Chicago Bulls and
Milwaukee Bucks in addition to hosting
the Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans.
