Josh Doig tells Verona transfer decision as Rangers learn outcome of Serie A battle

Josh Doig has told Verona he wants to join Torino as Rangers get set to potentially miss out on the left-back.

Rangers have been linked to a transfer for 21-year-old Doig, an ex-Hibs/dailysportnews.co.uk left defender, as the team gets ready for a period of transition at the position.

The scenario has become more intriguing due to reports that Verona of Serie A is nearing a move for Rangers striker Ridvan Yilmaz.

There were rumors that Rangers would attempt to work out a trade agreement with Verona in which the Turkish international would go to Italy and Josh Doig would go back to Scotland.

It seems the left-back has made up his mind in January as a move to the Serie A team draws near, as his connections to Torino are becoming stronger by the day.

Josh Doig had reportedly informed Verona that he wanted to relocate to Turin, at least that is what the Italian publication Calciomercato is claiming.

According to the source, Davide Vagnati, the director of Torino, is growing more optimistic that a deal can be reached because Doig has already verbally agreed to go across Serie A.

Josh Doig, who played just over 70 minutes in the weekend’s 2-1 loss to Inter Milan, is rumored to have also told Verona via his agency that he intends to transfer.

The rumour of Josh Doig joining Rangers is reportedly due to the Italians wanting €6 million (£5.2 million) for the young left-back, which automatically eliminates Rangers from consideration.

Rangers is anticipated to be active in the January transfer window as well, with left-back being a more problematic position in the team.

This comes amid rumors that Verona is nearing a deal to sign Ridvan Yilmaz, with the club’s transfer funds having been increased by Filippo Terracciano’s sale to AC Milan.

Rangers have been connected to a number of players for the left back position, so it’s an interesting situation all around. However, the club hasn’t made much progress in finding a replacement.

Rangers’ undetermined left-back links are Kai Wagner (Philadelphia Union), Gijs Smal (FC Twente), and Fredrik Oppegard (PSV Eindhoven).
