Everton may have boosted Kalvin
Phillips transfer hopes after Fabrizio
Romano drops Juventus update
After 20 games of the season, Sean
Dyche’s team was only one point above
the relegation zone due to a 10-point
deduction for breaking profit and
sustainability criteria, as determined by
an independent panel.
While there may not be much money to
spend at Goodison Park this month,
Dyche needs new options through the
door if possible and one name that has
been repeatedly linked with th
e switch to
Merseyside is Manchester City midfielder
Kalvin Phillips.
The England international was
reportedly interested in joining
Newcastle on a season-long loan, but the
team was aware of competition from
Crystal Palace, Everton, and Juventus,
according to reports from The Telegraph on December 27.
Following the publication of that report,
one team has withdrawn from the
competition for the 28-year-old’s
signature: Italian powerhouse Juventus
has announced that Fabrizio Romano
will not be pursuing Phillips in January.
“Juventus have no intention to proceed
for Kalvin Phillips deal at current
conditions after talks with Manchester
City on loan fee and salary coverage,” the
player wrote on his X account on Sunday, January 7.
“More clubs are welcome to enter;
Newcastle is still interested.”
Everton’s prospects of signing the out-of-
favor Manchester City player have now
increased significantly, should they
decide to do so. Earlier this month,
Juventus appeared to be the most likely
destination for the 28-year-old.
The only thing that worries many at
Goodison Park is if the Toffees would be
able to pay Phillips’ salary or loan fee.
Everton already faces its own financial
difficulties; should Juventus fail to meet City’s demand, could the Toffees?
Newcastle could not be able to meet
City’s demands because they themselves
must manage financial fair play
regulations. Pep Guardiola might also be
hesitant to start one of his players for the
second half of the season against a rival
team that is close to the top of the table.
