Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla thinks NBA should

rename Coach of the Month award When

Joe Mazzulla took over as the

Celtics’ head coach, he might not have

given a damn about winning coach of the

month. But he feels the award validates

what they’re doing every day as they tear

through the NBA with the best record through more than two months.

Mazzulla would also prefer a different name for the award.

Does it have any significance for me?

Mazzulla remarked, “In the past, I

probably would have said no,” following

the Celtics’ 126-97 victory over the Jazz to

raise their season total to 27-7. However,

I believe it’s a testimonial to the things

we’re producing and building. Thus, it

speaks highly of the personnel. Since I’m

not doing it alone, I wish they would

rename it staff of the month. Not only am

I not in charge of scouting, but I also do

not make revisions, match up players

during games, or advise lineups. That

includes every employee.

“Then if the players don’t let me coach

them, I’m not really a good coach. So I

think it’s a testament to the environment

we’re creating. So, yeah, it does mean

something to me, because it shows what

we’re doing is paying off. … I do think

they should get rid of the award or change it to staff of the month.”

Mazzulla was named the Eastern

Conference coach of the month after the

Celtics went a league-best 12-2 in

December. It was his second such honor

after he also won the award following

his first month in charge in

October/November 2022.

Assistants Charles Lee and Sam Cassell

were added to Mazzulla’s coaching staff

following the conclusion of the previous

campaign. The roster’s extreme talent

doesn’t hurt, and the additional

experience has been a huge benefit.

However, in his second season, Mazzulla

has made some progress. He was aware

of some dangers and inadequacies from

his first season. Notably, Mazzulla had

time this summer to establish a persona

and way of thinking for his team, in

contrast to the days before training camp

when he was thrown into the head-

coaching role with no time to prepare.

“I think Joe’s done a great job out of the

gate of saying, ‘This is how we need to

be. This is what we need to do for each

other to be the best that we can be. These

are the strengths of your teammates.

How can we get those out of them and

make it a focal point?’ ” Brad Stevens

said. “People use the word sacrifice a lot.

It’s the idea of serving a team. Like, being

there for the good of the group. And I

think he’s done a great job of that all the way through.
